The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is an honors college preparatory program offering an academic challenge to bright, motivated students in the Riverside Unified School District. The curriculum, designed by an international group of educators, emphasizes the development of higher level thinking skills in addition to the acquisition of knowledge in a variety of subjects. Courses reflect a global perspective and encourage the understanding of other cultures. Each student is expected to become proficient in language and mathematics -- the two most important tools of communication and analysis. Participants must also take courses that explore the experimental sciences and study human behavior and history. |

The IB program operates in the last two years of secondary school. IB diploma candidates study six subjects during the eleventh and twelfth grade and take external examinations in each area. The student selects one subject being offered by the school from each of the following areas:
- Language A – first language, including a study of world literature in translation from at least two continents and two language areas.
- Language B – French or Spanish
- Individuals in Society – economics
- Experimental Sciences – biology or physics
- Mathematics – calculus or higher mathematics
- A sixth subject – world history, theatre arts, or an additional experimental science
Ninth and tenth graders participate in the “pre-IB” program which is designed to aid students in developing the skills and knowledge necessary for success in IB.
A student may take fewer than six IB courses and examinations and qualify for individual subject Certificates instead of the Diploma. In addition to the six courses, the Diploma candidate must take a special inter-disciplinary IB course called Theory of Knowledge, prepare a research report in one of the six subjects studied, and participate in extra-curricular activities that provide opportunities for creativity, action, and service.

IB Offers Many Benefits to the school and the students. Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses have been adapted to match the IB curriculum and new courses have been developed in a variety of subjects. Benefits of the IB program include:
- The program provides a comprehensive, cohesive framework that unites and gives meaning to already existing honors courses, including AP.
- The high standards of teaching required for the program influence not only the IB courses, but the teaching of other courses as well. Because non-IB students can enroll in IB courses, the benefits of the program are widely shared.
- The IB does not rely solely on written examinations. A variety of assessment tools are used to measure student achievement.
- Participants receive additional attention and counseling.
- Transcripts forwarded to college admissions offices indicate enrollment in IB courses and extra grade points are awarded for honors, AP, and IB classes. Many colleges and universities have established policies regarding advanced standing or course credit for IB performance. Students are well prepared for the challenges of university life.
